JMP Side-by-Side Boxplots

Purpose: Suppose we wish to use side-by-side boxplots to examine total worldwide movie sales (in dollars) for different types of movies. The data is stored in the data file "Movies.jmp".

1) To open JMP, select Start/Programs/JMP IN 4/JMP IN 4. The initial
viewing screen is the JMPIN Starter menu. To analyze an existing data file,
select Open Data Table.

2) This opens the Open Data File menu. Double-click on the folder JMP IN Data.

3) Use the slide bar to scroll to the file "Movies.JMP" found within the JMP IN Data folder.
Double-click the file.

4) Now that we've accessed the desired data file, we can run analyses.

5) To compute correlations, select Analyze/Fit Y by X from the menu options at the top of the
screen. Under "Select Columns", single-click the desired response variable (i.e., "World-wide $"), and then single-click Y, Columns. Similarly, under "Select Columns", single-click the desired explanatory variable (i.e., "Type"), and then single-click X, Factor. Next, select OK.

6) A scatterplot World-wide $ by Type is output..

7) Single-click the red down arrow beside "Oneway Analysis of World-wide $ by Type".
From the menu that appears, select Display Options/Box Plots. Side-by-side boxplots appear,
as desired.

8) Explore options by simply clicking on buttons. Red arrows beside headings open menus;
blue arrows collapse or open windows.

8) Simple trial and error experimentation often works well. When this is ineffective,
select Help from the menu found at the top of the screen.
