JMP Univariate Graphics

Purpose: Suppose we wish to generate graphics for a set of crime data.
Specificially, we need a histogram, stem and leaf, and boxplot for murder
rates per 100,000 people recorded for each of the 50 U.S. states using the
data file "crime.jmp".

1) To open JMP, select Start/Programs/JMP IN 4/JMP IN 4. The initial
viewing screen is the JMPIN Starter menu. To analyze an existing data file,
select Open Data Table.

2) This opens the Open Data File menu. Double-click on the folder JMP IN Data.

3) Use the slide bar to scroll to the file "Crime.JMP" found within the JMP IN Data folder.
Double-click the file.

4) Now that we've accessed the desired data file, we can run analyses.

5) To generate univariate graphics, select Analyze/Distribution from the menu options at
the top of the screen. Use the Distribution menu to select variables of interest. In this scenario
we're only examining "murder" so single-click on murder. (If we wished to simultaneously
examine multiple variables, simply holding down the CTRL key while making the selections.)
Click Y, Columns to select the highlighted variables. Click OK.

6) The default output includes a histogram, boxplot, and number summaries discussed
in an earlier segment of statlink.duke.edu. Select (red arrow) Distributions/Stack to
if you prefer a landscape/horizontal (rather than portrait/vertical) window orientation.

7) Here is the landscape/horizontal orientation.

8) Numerous graphics are available. Select (red arrow) murder/Stem and Leaf.

9) Explore options by simply clicking on buttons. The red arrows beside headings open menus;
the blue arrows collapse or open windows.

10) Simple trial and error experimentation will often effectively yield graphics you seek.
When this is ineffective, select Help from the menu found at the top of the screen.
