JMP Univariate Number Summaries

Purpose: Suppose we wish to generate number summaries for some crime
data (saved in the data file "crime.jmp"). Specificially, we want the mean and
standard deviation for murder, assault, and auto theft.

1) To open JMP, select Start/Programs/JMP IN 4/JMP IN 4. The initial
viewing screen is the JMPIN Starter menu. To analyze an existing data file,
select Open Data Table.

2) This opens the Open Data File menu. Double-click on the folder JMP IN Data.

3) Use the slide bar to scroll to the file "Crime.JMP". Double-click the file.

4) Now that we've accessed the desired data file, we can run analyses.

5) To generate number summaries, select Analyze/Distribution.

6) Use the Distribution menu to select variables of interest. Holding down the CTRL key,
click on the variables "murder", "assault", and "auto".

7) Click Y, Columns to select the highlighted variables. Click OK..

8) Numerous number summaries are output. The mean and standard deviation are listed
under the heading "Moments".

9) Explore your options by simply clicking on buttons. The red arrows beside headings
open menus; the blue arrows collapse or open windows. Try clicking on each type of
arrow to see how it works.

10) For example, we are not interested in this example in the quantiles for murder, so
close this window by clicking on the blue arrow beside the murder "Quantiles". Suppose
we interested in additional number summaries, say the variance for murder. Click the red
arrow beside "murder", and then select Display Options/More Moments.

11) The additional output includes the desired variance computation.

12) Simple trial and error experimentation will often effectively yield the number
summaries you seek. When this is ineffective, select Help from the menu found at
the top of the screen.
